Punjab FC claimed a dominant 3-1 victory over Hyderabad FC in an Indian Super League 2024-25 group-stage match at the GMC Balayogi Athletic Stadium on Thursday. Notably, Shami Singamayum, at 17 years and 322 days, became the youngest goal-scorer in ISL history. Meanwhile, Muhammad Suhail, at 18 years and 175 days, became the third-youngest player to provide an assist in the league.

Despite having only 43.7% possession, Punjab controlled the attacking play. They recorded seven shots on target, whereas Hyderabad managed only two. Although Punjab was already out of the playoff race, this win took them to 27 points and ended Hyderabad’s five-match unbeaten streak at home.

Punjab Takes the Lead with an Own Goal

Right from the start, Punjab looked sharp. Asmir Suljic led the attack with his quick movements and precise passes.

In the 22nd minute, Suljic found Luka Majcen inside the box. Majcen aimed for the bottom left corner, but the goalkeeper made a crucial save. Earlier, in the 10th minute, Majcen had set up Suljic for a similar chance, but his shot lacked power, making it an easy stop.

Eventually, Punjab broke the deadlock in the 41st minute. Suhail attempted a long-range shot after receiving a pass from Ricky Shabong. Although his effort did not result in a goal, Punjab kept up the pressure. As a result, Hyderabad’s defense lost its shape. Under pressure, Alex Saji attempted a clearance but accidentally sent the ball into his own net, giving Punjab a 1-0 lead before halftime.

Punjab Extends Lead and Secures Victory

After the break, Punjab continued to dominate. Majcen focused on finishing, while Suhail took charge of playmaking. In the 56th minute, Suhail spotted Majcen inside the box and delivered a perfectly timed pass. Without hesitation, Majcen slotted the ball into the bottom left corner, doubling Punjab’s lead.

Meanwhile, Hyderabad pushed forward aggressively, hoping to reduce the deficit. Consequently, they had more possession but left gaps in their defense. Punjab quickly capitalized on this in the 86th minute. Petros Giakoumakis led a counter-attack and played a precise pass to Singamayum outside the box. The teenager struck the ball with his left foot and sent it straight into the net, sealing the win.

However, Hyderabad managed to pull one back in the final moments. Ramhlunchhunga received a pass from Cy Goddard and smashed it into the bottom right corner. Nevertheless, it was too late to mount a comeback. Ultimately, Punjab FC secured a well-deserved victory, taking home all three points.
