Mohammedan SC fought back from two goals down to secure a 2-2 draw against Punjab FC at Kishore Bharati Krirangan, Kolkata, in the Indian Super League 2024-25 on Monday. As a result, both teams concluded their campaigns for the season. Mohammedan SC finished with 13 points from 24 matches and, unfortunately, failed to win a single home game. Meanwhile, Punjab FC wrapped up their season with 28 points, recording eight wins and four draws.
Punjab FC Takes Early Control
From the start, Punjab FC dominated possession. They moved the ball swiftly and consistently broke through Mohammedan SC’s midfield.
Soon after, the visitors capitalized on their control. In the ninth minute, Asmir Suljic found space on the left and sent a precise pass to Ezequiel Vidal. Without hesitation, Vidal slotted the ball into the bottom left corner, giving Punjab FC an early lead.
Later, in the 53rd minute, Vidal played a crucial role again. He sent a through pass to Luka Majcen near the penalty area. Zodingliana Ralte attempted to intercept but lost control. Consequently, Majcen seized the opportunity and fired the ball into the bottom right corner, doubling Punjab FC’s lead.
Mohammedan SC Strikes Back
However, Mohammedan SC quickly responded. Just two minutes later, Manvir Singh delivered a sharp cross from the left. Several teammates gathered in the box, hoping to score. Although Vanlalzuidika Chhakchhuak managed to block the ball, Marc Schmerbock reacted instantly. He used his left foot to place the ball into the net, reducing the deficit to one goal.
Encouraged by this goal, Mohammedan SC increased their attacking pressure. In the 66th minute, Franca picked up the ball near the halfway line and launched a dazzling run. As three defenders rushed toward him, he smartly passed the ball to Robi Hansda at the perfect moment. Hansda wasted no time and smashed the ball into the top center of the goal, equalizing the score at 2-2.
Final Attempt Ends in a Draw
In the final minutes, Punjab FC made one last push. In the 83rd minute, Khaiminthang Lhungdim sent a cross to Petros Giakoumakis. Unfortunately for Punjab FC, the striker’s shot lacked power. Mohammedan SC’s defense reacted quickly and blocked the attempt.
Ultimately, neither team managed to find a winning goal. After an intense battle, the match ended in a well-fought 2-2 draw.
