The International Cricket Council (ICC) Champions Trophy 2025 is Pakistan’s first ICC event hosting since 1996. The curtain raiser for the held at the historic Dewan-e-Khas in Lahore Fort included a stunning light show, which heralded what will be an exciting tournament.

Defending champion Pakistan, who won the 2017 Champions Trophy by defeating India by 180 runs at The Oval, London, are eager to make their mark once again. Several players from the 2017 squad attended the event, adding nostalgia and significance to the launch.

PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi highlighted the significance of this tournament. He stated “The ICC Champions Trophy 2025 will return to Pakistan for the first time in 29 years. This tournament is more than just cricket; it is an opportunity to showcase Pakistan’s hospitality and passion.”

Historic Venue Add Cultural Significance

Pakistan’s rich history and cricket tradition are reflected in the choice of Lahore Fort as the opening event. Mohsin Naqvi highlighted the importance of fan participation and urged the community to support the event by packing stadiums. “This is your moment to fill the stadiums,” he told Pakistan’s avid cricket enthusiasts.

Tournament Format and Groups

The 2025 ICC Champions Trophy consists of two groups:

Group A: Pakistan, New Zealand, India, and Bangladesh
Group B: Australia, England, South Africa, and Afghanistan (making their Champions Trophy debut)

The two top teams from each group will qualify for the semi-finals. The tournament will begins on February 19, with Pakistan taking on New Zealand in the first match.

India’s Matches to Played in UAE

India will not play in Pakistan because of political tensions. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has scheduled all Indian matches to be held in the UAE instead of Pakistan. This makes India participate without going against the government’s position on playing in Pakistan.
