Bumrah Likely to Miss Second Test as India Manages His Workload

Jasprit Bumrah may sit out the second Test against England, starting July 2 at Edgbaston. According to reports, this is part of a planned workload management strategy.

Bumrah Stands Out Despite Loss

Recently, Bumrah returned to Test cricket after a long back injury. He bowled 24.4 overs in the first innings at Leeds and took five wickets. However, India lost the match by five wickets. The defeat came mainly due to poor fielding and weak bowling support.

Other Pacers Struggle

Meanwhile, Bumrah remained sharp. In contrast, Prasidh Krishna, Mohammed Siraj, and Shardul Thakur lacked control and consistency. Moreover, Bumrah’s efforts were let down by fielders. They dropped three catches off his bowling. One of those was Harry Brook, who survived three chances before scoring 99.

Team Chooses to Be Cautious

Despite the loss, the team wants to protect Bumrah’s fitness. Earlier, head coach Gautam Gambhir confirmed Bumrah wouldn’t play every Test. “If we leave out Bumrah and Siraj, there is not much experience in the line-up but we need to back them as they have got talent,” Gambhir said after the Leeds loss. “This pace attack comprises of one bowler who has played four Tests, another who has played two, and one who hasn’t played a Test.”

Focus Shifts to Third Test

Since the third Test at Lord’s begins only four days after the second, resting Bumrah now seems wise. Still, his absence will leave a gap. Siraj, who had a quiet match in Leeds, may lead the bowling. In addition, India could bring in Arshdeep Singh or add Kuldeep Yadav as a spinner.

Gill Faces Extra Pressure

At the same time, captain Shubman Gill faces questions. Many criticised his bowling changes and field placements. Now, with India trailing 0–1 in the series, the team must regroup quickly. The pressure is on to bounce back in Birmingham.
