Netflix is heading to space through a groundbreaking partnership with NASA. Starting this summer, subscribers will be able to stream NASA+ content. This includes live rocket launches, spacewalks, and views from the International Space Station, all from the comfort of their homes.

This partnership also comes amid growing pop culture interest in space. Celebrities going for space exploration, creating a buzz and interest about space is exactly what this partnership aims to capitalize on.

New Era of Streaming Space Exploration

“Starting this summer, NASA+ live programming will be available on Netflix,” the space agency confirmed. The partnership aims to bring the thrill of space exploration to Netflix’s 700 million+ subscribers around the world.

Netflix has been diving into live content recently, from sports to talk shows. Their new deal with NASA extends this trend. In a statement on its editorial site, Tudum, Netflix teased, “The next giant leap for humankind might just start with you pressing play.”

Space, Streaming, and Next Gen of Exploration

Launched in 2023, NASA+ is already available for free on NASA’s website and app. But with this collaboration, the agency hopes to ignite more global curiosity. “Audiences now will have another option to stream rocket launches, astronaut spacewalks, mission coverage, and breathtaking live views of Earth from the International Space Station,” NASA said.

Rebecca Sirmons, general manager of NASA+, emphasized their mission: “The National Aeronautics and Space Act of 1958 calls on us to share our story of space exploration with the broadest possible audience,” she said. “Together, we’re committed to a Golden Age of Innovation and Exploration — inspiring new generations — right from the comfort of their couch or in the palm of their hand from their phone.”

Netflix has already had success with live events, like NFL games and Beyoncé’s halftime show. Even a controversial Tyson vs. Paul fight drew 60 million viewers. Now, it’s betting that space travel can draw similar excitement.

This partnership also comes amid growing pop culture interest in space. Earlier this year, singer Katy Perry and five other celebrities flew on Blue Origin’s New Shepard rocket, generating massive buzz.

According to Tudum, the NASA+ live feeds will appear alongside Netflix’s regular series. A detailed schedule will be shared closer to each launch.
