The Congress party on Saturday called for the regulation of private coaching centres that prepare students for jobs and professional courses, alleging that many of them were engaging in “crass profiteering” and “exploiting gullible people.”
Speaking at a press conference at the AICC office, party leader Kanhaiya Kumar, a permanent invitee to the CWC, expressed concerns over the unchecked growth of these coaching centres. He claimed that they were “exploiting students” and that some were disappearing after charging high fees.
Kumar urged the government to ensure that “vacancies are filled in a transparent manner by conducting examinations in a fair manner.”
Highlighting the struggles of young aspirants, Kumar alleged that many were being pushed to the brink of desperation, citing an alarming statistic: “on average, 28 students are committing suicide daily in the country.”
“The government should take responsibility… it is the result of systematic failure,” he asserted, emphasizing that excessive pressure and “lack of employment opportunities” were major concerns.
He pointed out that for some job openings with only about 100 vacancies, there were “lakhs of aspirants” who sought coaching center assistance.
Kumar stressed the need for the government to strengthen public institutions, stating that this would, in turn, ensure better performance from the private sector.
