Sunjay Kapur Leaves Behind Legacy, Bonds for Kids Worth ₹14 Crore

Sunjay Kapur, businessman and ex-husband of Bollywood actress Karisma Kapoor, passed away on June 12, 2025, in England after suffering a heart attack while playing polo. He was 53 years old.

Details of Their Divorce and Settlement

Sunjay and Karisma had tied the knot in 2003, and together they had two children—Samaira, born in 2005, and Kiaan, born in 2011. However, after more than a decade of marriage, the couple filed for divorce by mutual consent in 2014, and their separation was legally finalised in 2016.

Though they initially agreed to part ways amicably, their divorce proceedings saw disagreements—especially regarding the custody of their children and the division of assets. According to a 2016 ANI report, Sunjay had made a significant financial gesture for his children’s future by purchasing bonds worth ₹14 crore, with an annual interest payment of ₹10 lakh.

As part of the settlement, custody of the children was granted to Karisma, while Sunjay received visitation rights. Additionally, Karisma was allotted a property owned by Sunjay’s father.

Despite the rocky divorce, reports suggest that Karisma and Sunjay maintained a civil and respectful relationship after the separation.

Co-Parenting and Family Moments

One notable example of their ongoing co-parenting was during their daughter Samaira’s 18th birthday. Sunjay Kapur attended the celebration with his wife Priya Sachdev (whom he married after divorcing Karisma). He shared heartfelt photos on his X (formerly Twitter) handle, posting: “A father holds his daughter’s hand for a short while, but he holds her heart forever. Happy 18th birthday to my first love, Samaira. Welcome to adulthood. Remember to be responsible and live your life to the fullest. You are beautiful inside out. And we are all so proud of you.”

After parting ways with Karisma, Sunjay married Priya Sachdev, who already had a daughter from a previous marriage. Together, Sunjay and Priya had a son named Azarius.

What Happened During the Polo Match

On the day of his death, Sunjay was playing polo at the prestigious Guards Polo Club in England. According to sources close to him, he began feeling shortness of breath during the match and asked to be excused from the game.

Alarming details emerged later that Sunjay had accidentally swallowed a bee, which reportedly stung him in the throat. The sting triggered a severe allergic reaction, believed to have caused the heart attack that led to his untimely death.

At the time, Sunjay was also managing his own polo team called Aureus, and during the fatal match, his team was playing against Sujan, a polo team owned by Jaisal Singh, a hotelier.
