In response to a controversial incident on Jumat-ul-Vida, the Jammu and Kashmir police have initiated legal proceedings by registering an FIR (First Information Report) regarding an alleged forced conversion. The incident, captured on video and widely circulated on social media, purportedly shows a non-local individual converting to Islam during Friday prayers at the Hazratbal shrine.
According to reports, the video, which gained significant traction on socialmedia platforms, features a person identified as Sandeep from Haryana, reportedly converting his religion at the Hazratbal shrine. The dissemination of this footage has sparked public unrest and concerns about religious harmony and tolerance, extending beyond the borders of Jammu and Kashmir and Union Territory.
The FIR highlights that Sandeep was allegedly coerced into conversion by Anayat Muntazir, the owner of the house where Sandeep worked as a domestic worker in Srinagar. Anayat purportedly manipulated Sandeep into reciting the Kalma (Islamic declaration of faith) during congregational prayers at the shrine.
In response, the police have registered FIR no. 55/2024 at Police Station Nigeen under various sections of the Indian Penal Code, including 188, 298, 153, and 153-A, which pertain to disobedience of public orders, deliberate intent to hurt religious sentiments, provocation with intent to cause riots, and promoting enmity between groups on religious grounds.
A Sub-Inspector has been designated to investigate the matter thoroughly and submit a comprehensive report to the Superintendent of Police for further action.
The Jammu and Kashmir police have appealed to the public to remain calm as they diligently address the situation to ensure justice prevails and maintain communal harmony. This development underscores the sensitive nature of religious issues in the region and the authorities’ commitment to upholding law and order.
