Hemant Soren, the chief minister of Jharkhand, won a confidence motion on Monday that he tabled in the Assembly amid a walkout staged by the BJP legislatures.

In the 81-member House, the motion of the ruling coalition was passed with 48 votes.

The BJP, its affiliate AJSU Party, and two independents boycotted the vote, yet the motion nonetheless passed.

In a special one-day session earlier, he addressed the House and asked for a vote of confidence as the future of the ruling coalition and his political career remained uncertain.

Soren claimed the onus of poaching Congress MLAs, who were caught in Bengal with a huge amount of cash, lies with Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, while stating that obstacles are being presented before the state government.

Three of our MLAs are in Bengal. The onus of poaching (of MLAs) in Bengal lies with the Assam CM, Himanta Biswa Sarma. “They don’t cooperate with police going to those states to probe this,” Soren said.

Along with a sizable contingent of MLAs from the JMM, Congress, and Rashtriya Janata Dal, which make up the government coalition, the leader of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) attended the House.

The MPs left a resort in the capital of Chhattisgarh, Raipur, a day ago by plane, allegedly out of fear that the Opposition BJP would try to sway them to the opposing camp.

The BJP petitioned for Soren to be disqualified from the Assembly due to allegations of using his office for profit, which sparked the political crisis in Jharkhand.

The BJP has charged Soren with giving a mining lease to himself in 2021 while he was the state’s mining minister.

In February of this year, the BJP sent a memo to Governor Ramesh Bais requesting that Soren be disqualified from the House of Representatives in accordance with Section 9(A) of the Representation of People’s Act.

The governor has received the Election Commission’s verdict in this matter, but it has not yet been made public.
