In Fatehabad, farmers associated with the Jat Farmers’ Struggle Committee have strongly opposed the imposition of security charges and the installation of new smart meters on electricity bills. A significant number of farmers in Fatehabad protested at the electricity board’s sub-divisional office on this issue. During the protest, farmers vociferously criticized the government and handed over a memorandum to the electricity board’s Sub-Divisional Officer, demanding the immediate withdrawal of security charges and the decision to install smart meters.
The main spokesperson for the committee, Mandeep Nathwan, stated that the government is exploiting the people in the name of electricity bills in the state. He alleged that in states where elections are held, BJP leaders make promises of providing free electricity to the public, but in Haryana, where the BJP is already in power, exorbitant electricity bills are being sent by imposing security charges.People are perplexed as to whether they should feed their families with their earnings or burden themselves with hefty electricity bills to fill the government’s coffers. Until the government withdraws the decision to impose security charges, no bills will be paid.
Opposing the installation of new smart meters, Mandeep Nathwan argued that when the existing meters are functioning correctly, there is no justification for spending billions on new meters.
