During the second day of the ongoing winter assembly session, discussion over a calling attention motion moved by the opposition on the issue of deaths in Yamunanagar due to poisonous liquor led to ruckus in the house. Regarding the issue which resulted in uproar between the ruling BJP-JJP led government and the opposition parties, the Congress legislators said that the government has failed to crack down on the adulterers and the casual approach in the matter resulted in untimely death of several lives. Responding to the matter, Home Minister Anil Vij said that the government has left no stone unturned in taking any action against the accused. The proposal was brought in the House on behalf of many Congress MLAs. Apart from him, INLD’s Abhay Singh Chautala and independent Balraj Kundu also tried to corner the government on the issue. When Abhay asked for data regarding action taken in the case of poisonous liquor, Anil Vij said that all that data has been tabled in the house. In a reaction to the calling attention motion , Haryana Home Minister, Anil Vij said that in the matter relating to the death of 20 people due to consumption of spurious liquor, as per report received from Superintendents of Police, Yamunanagar and Ambala, 20 deaths have occurred due to suspected consumption of spurious liquor. Five FIRs have been lodged in this connection and 52 arrests involving 36 persons have been made in these two districts.
On the issue of deaths due to poisonous liquor, Anil Vij took a dig at Congress and INLD and said that the accused is from Bhupendra Singh Hooda’s party. Hooda expressed strong objection stating that , what does this mean to me? Taking cognizance of this, Speaker Gyan Chand Gupta asked the officials to remove the said words from the proceedings of the House. Then Anil Vij said that it is okay, I do not take the name of Hooda and the accused in the case was a Congress leader. Apart from this, when he made another reference of the accused to INLD, the parly legislator leader Abhay Singh Chautala expressed strong objection urging Anil Vij not to take serious issue with casual approach.
Home Minister Anil Vij and opposition MLAs were seen continuously clashing over the figures of deaths due to poisonous liquor and drugs. Citing statistics on deaths due to spurious liquor, Anil Vij said that 34 people have died due to spurious liquor and intoxication in the five-year period from 2017 to 2022. Even on the figures of deaths, Abhay Chautala cornered Vij and said that people are dying every day while the Home Minister is just mentioning only 34 deaths. Addressing Vij, Abhay said that you have also been misguided by giving wrong figures and similarly, Vij opted out to misguide the house.
