One day before Diwali, more than a dozen people died from consuming toxic liquor in Mandebri village. The administration had previously sealed the source of the toxic alcohol reaching the village. Today, upon its reopening, women arrived at the site to set the liquor shop ablaze. This led to a scuffle with the police, resulting in the arrest of a youth who was found in possession of a can filled with kerosene.
In Mandebri village, Yamunanagar, more than a dozen deaths occurred due to consuming toxic liquor. Although this incident was reported in some villages in Yamunanagar and Ambala, the administration sealed the source after the deaths in Mandebri. After the shop’s closure, the anger among the locals had significantly subsided. However, when the same liquor shop reopened, people’s anger surged to new heights. The situation escalated when, at night, individuals were seen indulging in vulgar acts and exposing women outside the liquor shop.
Women accused these individuals of behaving indecently by removing their clothes and, on the other hand, the alcohol from this shop had caused lamp lights in several homes to extinguish. Enraged women arrived at the liquor shop today with a kerosene-filled can. Initially stopped by the police, the authorities were unaware that these individuals had gathered to set the shop on fire. As soon as the police noticed the can filled with kerosene, they intervened. The police detained a youth by force and engaged in physical altercations. Eventually, the police dispersed the women and arrested a youth. Despite this, the locals’ anger seemed unappeased. While heavy police forces were deployed outside the shop, the licensee, previously holding the shop, has now been canceled and allocated to another. However, before the situation escalated, some women were already intercepted. The police are considering registering a case against an individual who acted indecently in front of women at the shop. Although the situation has temporarily calmed down, the underlying tension among the people remains, which could erupt at any moment.
