North Korea has officially opened a massive new tourist zone in the coastal city of Wonsan, aiming to draw more domestic and foreign travelers. Inaugurated on Wednesday by Supreme Leader Kim Jong Un, the Wonsan Kalma coastal area is set to offer beach access, recreational facilities, and dining options.

The opening ceremony was attended by Kim’s daughter Kim Ju Ae and wife Ri Sol Ju. State media described Kim’s reaction to the site as one of “great satisfaction.”
Resort Features
According to KCNA, the resort includes sea-bathing services, commercial areas, and facilities to host up to 20,000 guests. The new zone will be open to North Korean citizens starting July 1.
Tourism as a Lifeline
With international sanctions squeezing the economy, tourism remains a rare untapped revenue source for Pyongyang. Before the pandemic, North Korea saw tourist numbers jump from 100,000 in 2014 to 350,000 in 2019.
