NEW DELHI: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will get a new national president this month. If sources are to be believed, the schedule for the election of the BJP’s national president may be announced in the coming week. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is likely to return to the country by July 10. After his arrival, the process of selecting a new party president is expected to accelerate rapidly.

Modi’s visit to five countries is scheduled from July 2. Over the last weekend, the party began tours related to the July 2 elections of major state presidents. Decisions from some states are expected following the return of Modi. For the national president’s election, state-level presidential elections are being held in states ranging from Madhya Pradesh to Uttar Pradesh.

The term of the party president J.P. Nadda ended two years ago. The announcement regarding the schedule for electing his successor is yet to be made.

According to the party constitution, only a member with at least 15 years of party membership is eligible to become president. Several names are being discussed, including former Andhra Pradesh BJP chief D. Purandeswari and BJP Mahila Morcha National President Vanathi Srinivasan. Sources indicate there is consensus between the Sangh and the BJP on her name.

Elections in Uttar Pradesh are scheduled for next year, so every criterion is being carefully examined before any decision is taken. In some states, the appointment of state presidents is being delayed due to factionalism. There has been no disclosure regarding Gujarat and its divisions. Final decisions on these names are expected after the arrival of Modi.
