The US-funded Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF) suspended all aid distribution on Wednesday, calling on Israel to enhance civilian security in and around its food distribution points. The suspension came a day after Israeli soldiers fired on Palestinians near one of the GHF aid centers, leaving at least 27 dead, the Red Cross said.

With Gaza descending further into anarchy, the United Nations Security Council plans to vote on a resolution demanding an immediate, lasting ceasefire and unhindered humanitarian access throughout the war-scarred enclave.

Civilians Killed Amid Aid Chaos

GHF’s halt comes after a Tuesday fatal shooting. Israeli forces opened fire on what they called a “threat” close to a GHF food aid facility. The International Committee of the Red Cross said 27 were killed and dozens injured. GHF stated violence erupted “well beyond” its facility.

Eye-witnesses reported scenes of chaos. Civilians rushed for boxes of aid with no coordination or checks. The Israeli army warned that areas that are en route to GHF locations are “combat areas” and advised civilians to stay away from them on Wednesday.

GHF Calls For Safety Reforms

GHF called upon the Israeli military to lead civilians more effectively, avoid confusion, and avert escalation around areas near military zones. It further advocated for more precise instructions for those who seek aid and improved staff to safeguard civilians. “Our number-one priority is still maintaining the safety and dignity of civilians receiving assistance,” stated a GHF official.

Since opening operations a week ago, GHF says it has delivered more than seven million meals from three secure locations. It employs private U.S. security and logistics companies to transport aid. But most humanitarian agencies, including the UN, have declined to cooperate with GHF. They say the model is not impartial and militarizes aid.

UN Vote Hangs Over Ceasefire

The UN Security Council will debate on Wednesday a resolution calling for an immediate, unconditional, and permanent ceasefire. The draft also insists on the release of all hostages and the removal of all impediments to the entry and delivery of aid.

The administration of US President Donald Trump has not yet indicated whether it will veto the proposal. To pass, nine votes and no veto by the five permanent members are required.

Famine Risk Increases

Experts warn Gaza’s 2.1 million inhabitants are on the brink of famine. Past attempts, including Jordan-led air drops and a temporary US floating dock, have not staunched aid flow. Israel accuses Hamas of pilfering aid. Hamas denies the accusation. The UN attributes blame to Israeli restrictions and widespread lawlessness in Gaza.

Tuesday witnessed fierce violence as well. Israel reported that three of its soldiers had been killed in the northern Gaza battles. Gaza authorities reported 18 Palestinians dead in other attacks. Reuters was unable to confirm these reports.

The Gaza aid crisis has come to a breaking point. With civilians dying for food, GHF’s suspension underscores the urgency. As the UN calls for a ceasefire, the world waits to see whether diplomacy can stop the killing and resume aid moving safely once more.
