Israeli Airstrike Targets Hamas Leader Mohammad Sinwar at Gaza Hospital

On May 13, 2025, the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) conducted a major airstrike on the Khan Younis European Hospital in the southern Gaza region. The mission was to eliminate Mohammad Sinwar, the existing Hamas leader and brother to the deceased Yahya Sinwar.

The airstrike killed at least 28 people and left many injured, sparking global outrage as well as questions regarding the targeting of hospitals during war zones.

Targeting Hamas Leaders

The IDF, jointly with Shin Bet, hit an allegedly Hamas underground command center located under the European Hospital. Mohammad Sinwar, who took over command following his brother Yahya’s death in 2024, was reportedly at the location. Though Israeli authorities have not officially confirmed his death, they still evaluate the success of the operation.

The air raid inflicted heavy damage on the hospital’s infrastructure, especially its courtyard and entrance. Dr. Saleh Al Hams, the nursing head, said that numerous people are still trapped under the rubble. The Gaza Health Ministry confirmed 28 deaths and dozens of injuries, including a freelance journalist. The hospital, one of the region’s main medical facilities, was also used as shelter for internally displaced civilians, worsening the humanitarian crisis.

Hamas Denies Allegations

Hamas denied Israeli allegations of running a command center under the hospital. The group said only official Palestinian resistance platforms can confirm or deny such information. They accused Israel of trying to make the hospital inoperable and of using such accusations to legitimize strikes on civilian infrastructure.

The blockade has focused worldwide attention on the military strategy of Israel. Emmanuel Macron, French President, denounced the moves as “shameful” and demanded tighter sanctions. Tom Fletcher, the UN relief coordinator, called for intervention by the Security Council and spoke of inhumane living conditions in Gaza. The United States is pushing for renewed negotiations towards peace and restoration of humanitarian assistance, with special emphasis on the desperate situation for civilians in the area.

Current Conflict and Future Consequences

This event serves to highlight the growing tensions between Hamas and Israel, as each side commits to actions that have far-reaching humanitarian ramifications. As the diplomatic community is still working towards a solution, the international community is still worrying about the targeting of medical centers and the general consequences for civilians who find themselves trapped in the conflict.
