Will Altman return as OpenAI CEO?

One day after being removed as the CEO of OpenAI, Sam Altman posted a message expressing his love for the OpenAI team. The post, with over 4.3 million views, sparked rumours of his potential return to the AI firm, leading to speculation and messages from users anticipating his comeback. Co-founder Greg Brockman, who resigned in protest of Altman’s removal, responded with a heart emoji, further fueling speculation about their potential return.

Altman’s sudden departure has triggered additional resignations, including that of Brockman, and reports suggest more resignations may follow in the coming weeks, pressuring the board to reconsider its decision.

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella, a major investor in OpenAI, has reportedly been in contact with Altman, expressing support for his next endeavors. Nadella was reportedly surprised by the board’s decision to remove Altman but has extended support to interim CEO Mira Murati.

Altman had led OpenAI as CEO since 2019 and was dismissed by the board, citing a loss of confidence in his leadership. The board’s decision followed a review process, stating that Altman was not consistently candid in his communications with the board, hindering its ability to fulfill its responsibilities.

Differences of opinion on AI safety, the pace of technological development, and the commercialization of the company were cited as reasons for the decision. The decision has faced widespread disagreement from within the company and its investors.
