Train Cancellations, Packed Platforms: How Chaos Led to New Delhi Station Stampede?

Authorities have launched a high-level probe into the deadly stampede at New Delhi railway station. The incident claimed 18 lives after two trains to Prayagraj were suddenly canceled. As a result, panic spread, and chaos erupted on the crowded platform.

Massive Crowd Triggered Panic

According to the railway ministry, a sudden rush of passengers caused panic. Consequently, many people fainted as the crowd became uncontrollable. Officials described the situation as an “unprecedented rush.”

Devotees Gathered for Maha Kumbh

Thousands of pilgrims had gathered at platform 14 to travel to Prayagraj for the Mahakumbh Mela. However, the situation worsened when two other trains—the Swatantrata Senani Express and the Bhubaneshwar Rajdhani—were delayed. As a result, passengers waiting on platforms 12, 13, and 14 became restless.

DCP (Railways) KPS Malhotra explained, “When Prayagraj Express was standing at platform number 14, a heavy crowd was present. Swatantrata Senani Express and Bhubaneshwar Rajdhani were delayed, and passengers from these trains were also present on platforms 12, 13, and 14. That’s why the crowd became uncontrollable.” Moreover, he added that two stampedes occurred—one at platform 14 and another near the escalator at platform 16.

Blocked Staircases Made It Worse

In an effort to control the crowd, railway officials blocked one staircase each at platforms 14 and 15. However, as trains were delayed, more passengers tried to use the staircases. As a result, people pushed forward, trying to board trains or move toward the exit.

An official, speaking anonymously, said, “This pushing led to many people falling and a stampede. Others suffocated as the crowd kept swelling on the platform.”

Investigation Underway

Due to the severity of the incident, the railway ministry has ordered a thorough investigation. Officials aim to determine the cause of the disaster and take necessary measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
