In a sad blow to Karnataka’s wildlife conservation initiative, a tigress and four of her cubs were discovered dead at the Male Mahadeshwara Wildlife Sanctuary (MM Hills) in Chamarajanagar district on Thursday. Officials believe the big cats have died after eating poisoned meat, prompting a high-level probe.

Following the tragic discovery, Karnataka Forest Minister Eshwar Khandre ordered the Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (PCCF) to conduct a detailed investigation. The minister asked for an interim report within three days.

“Preliminary investigation has found that the tigress and cubs have died naturally. If evidence of negligence on the part of forest staff is established, disciplinary action will be initiated against them. If this incident is found to be a case of poisoning, I have directed the concerned officials to file criminal cases against them,” said Minister Khandre.

Initial Evidence Points to Poisoning

As per forest officials, the tigers could have eaten meat contaminated with poisonous chemicals. Although the cause of death is yet to be established, preliminary evidence indicates foul play. To this end, a five-member technical team was sent in to carry out exhaustive necropsies on the bodies.

The region has been fenced off and made a protected area to ensure no interference or contamination of evidence.

High-Level Committee to Provide Detailed Report

A high-level committee of inquiry, headed by BP Ravi, Chief Principal Conservator of Forests, has been constituted to conduct the probe. The committee has been tasked with submitting a detailed report within 14 days on the deaths.

Forest department officials are also investigating the possibility of clashes with local people or intentional poisoning as a form of retaliation against wild animal predation. Patrols in surrounding areas have been stepped up to watch out for any more attacks on wildlife.

Big Setback to Karnataka’s Tiger Conservation

This is a crushing blow to Karnataka, especially since the state holds the number two position in India in terms of tiger population. Consequently, losing four tiger cubs and their mother in one go is regarded as a significant setback to the state’s conservation efforts.

The authorities have assured that they will take quick and drastic action against anyone found guilty.
