Three Arrested for Gangrape of Law Student Inside Kolkata College

Kolkata Police have arrested three men in connection with the gangrape of a first-year law student at South Calcutta Law College in the Kasba area. The assault took place on June 25, and the victim filed a police complaint the next day.

Among the accused, two are current students, and one is a former student. Police identified them as Monojit Mishra (31), a college staff member; and students Zaib Ahmed (19) and Pramit Mukherjee (20). A court in Alipore has sent them to police custody until July 1.

She Went to College for Work, Then Was Trapped

The survivor, who is in her first year, went to the campus around 4 PM for some college-related work. Around 6:10 PM, one of the accused asked her to stay back after others had started leaving.

In her First Information Report (FIR), she said, “He called me outside the room (Union room) and told me that from the very first day he likes me. After his girlfriend he is in love with someone and that is me and he gave a proposal for marriage.”

Soon after, the situation turned violent. According to the FIR, the main accused asked the other two men to leave the room and lock the door.

She Described Brutal Details in Her Complaint

The woman said in the FIR, “It was within fraction of second…He took me near the washroom and tried to force me with the intention of rousing sex.”

She begged him to stop. “I touched his feet but he did not let me go,” she said. The accused then told the other two men to take her to the guard’s room and make the guard wait outside, according to her statement.

She Was Threatened, Filmed, and Blackmailed

The woman claimed she was threatened and assaulted repeatedly. “They threatened to kill my boyfriend and arrest my parents,” she wrote in her complaint. She said the accused recorded the rape and used it to blackmail her.

“He showed two videos of me being naked from when he raped me. He threatened to show everyone this video if I do not co-operate and come whenever he calls me,” she added.

The FIR also mentions that the accused “tried to hit [her] with a hockey stick.” She said, “I just left myself like a dead body. He finished his forceful penetration and then left me.”

She walked out of the room at 10:05 PM, and he warned her “not to tell anyone.”

Assault Happened Over Three Hours in Guard Room

Police said the men confined the student in the guard room on the ground floor of the college. The alleged assault lasted from 7:30 PM to 10:50 PM. She later informed her parents that night, and they helped her lodge a formal complaint the next day.

Investigators have now seized the accused’s mobile phones and sent them for forensic testing to retrieve video evidence.

Political Links Add to Controversy

Police revealed that Monojit Mishra’s social media profile shows his past link to the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC). He had previously served as a TMC youth leader at the college.

Mishra’s lawyer, Azam Khan, denied the allegations. He said, “These are baseless allegations against my client. He is being framed because of a political tussle.”

TMC Faces Political Heat

The case has led to political tension in West Bengal. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) blamed the TMC government for failing to protect women. They also pointed out Mishra’s TMC links.

In response, the TMC condemned the incident and said the party had no connection with the accused.
