Ramlila Maidan is abuzz with arrangements for Delhi’s new Chief Minister’s oath-taking ceremony. The much-awaited event is under preparation by workers who are also arranging seating and installing tents. On February 19, the recently elected BJP MLAs will gather to choose their legislative party chief, who will then be sworn in as Chief Minister on February 20.
Senior BJP members Tarun Chugh and Vinod Tawde are in charge of the preparations, guaranteeing everything runs smoothly. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to be present at the big function, as well as several Chief Ministers of BJP and NDA-controlled states.
Leading Candidates for the Post of the Chief Minister of Delhi
With the BJP getting ready to lead Delhi after 27 years, there is much conjecture about the party’s Chief Minister nominee. Among the most important people being considered are Parvesh Verma, Satish Upadhyay, Ashish Sood, and Rekha Gupta. The BJP’s overwhelming win—the party now has 48 of 70 seats—has set it up for a strong beginning of governance. The Congress did not win a seat for the third co-operated election, whereas the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) got only 22 seats.
Opposition parties are questioning the lack of direction of the BJP regarding the CM candidate, so the delay in the new government formation has drawn some criticism.
Why could Rekha Gupta be the next CM of Delhi?
Rekha Gupta has become a strong applicant for the Chief Minister’s office among the best choices. In the most recent elections, Gupta won the Shalimar Bagh seat by a substantial 29,595 votes against Vandana Kumari of AAP, giving him an unassailable victory.
Gupta, originally from Jind, Haryana, has been engaged in politics since her student days. Her ties with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and the Bharatiya Janata Party are long-standing. Her political background features several years as the North Delhi mayor, hence her thorough administrative experience. Apart from this, she serves as general secretary of Delhi BJP Mahila Morcha and has been instrumental in the Mahila Morcha of the BJP. She is now a National Executive member of the party.
Rekha Gupta would become the only woman BJP Chief Minister among 21 states if she were named Chief Minister of Delhi. Her nomination would be a major turning point for the party, underscoring its intent on female leadership in Indian politics.
February 19 is the date of the decision. Therefore, all attention will be on the impending Chief Ministerial selection of the BJP, hence starting a fresh era in Delhi’s administration.
