Prime Minister Narendra Modi had a meeting with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni on the margins of the 51st G7 Summit, which took place in Kananaskis, Alberta, Canada. The two leaders’ encounter again became viral on social media, showing the increasing bonhomie between them.

A clip from the summit presented PM Modi warmly embracing Meloni with a hug, an exchange of words, and a brief handshake. Revealing his optimism regarding India–Italy relations, PM Modi affirmed that the relationship between the two nations is becoming even stronger and will only continue to grow, yielding common advantages.


Their warm rapport has already enthralled social media users, with the hashtag #Melodi trending. Selfies and videos of the two leaders have already gone viral in the past, such as one taken during the COP28 summit in Dubai. Meloni had captioned in that post, \”Good friends at COP28, #Melodi.” At the G20 summit in India too, netizens had cut pieces of their interactions into video clips with Bollywood tunes and funny captions, adding further buzz online about their chemistry.

The meeting of the leaders emphasizes the enhancement of diplomatic relations between India and Italy, particularly in vital areas like sustainability, clean energy, and industrial cooperation.

PM Modi landed in Canada previously on Monday (local time) as a part of his three-nation visit, which commenced in Cyprus and will end in Croatia. The visit is his first to Canada in ten years and his sixth consecutive visit to the G7 Summit.

When he landed at Calgary airport, the Indian Prime Minister was given a ceremonial welcome. India’s acting High Commissioner to Canada, Chinmoy Naik, was there to greet him.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney received PM Modi officially at the summit site, the Pomeroy Kananaskis Mountain Lodge.

Tweeting on X, PM Modi said, “Landed in Calgary, Canada, to take part in the G7 Summit. Will be meeting various leaders at the Summit and sharing my thoughts on important global issues. Will also be emphasising the priorities of the Global South.”


Prime Minister Narendra Modi will participate in mainline G7 talks on the future of energy security, informed Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal. The discussions will revolve around the issues such as diversification, cutting-edge technology, infrastructure, and investment to provide affordable and accessible energy in an evolving global context.

At PM @MarkJCarney’s invitation, PM @narendramodi reaches Alberta, Canada to attend the G7 Summit. PM will be contributing to @G7 deliberations on the future of energy security, such as diversification, technology, infrastructure and investment, so that access and affordability are ensured in an evolving world. PM will also have a few bilateral meetings on the sidelines,” Jaiswal tweeted on X.


PM Modi’s visit comes at a crucial juncture in India–Canada relations, which had seen recent diplomatic strain. His presence at the G7 Summit not only reflects India’s global engagement but also underscores its commitment to representing the interests of the Global South.
