In a recent announcement, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has mandated that FASTag customers complete the “Know Your Customer” (KYC) process for their latest FASTags by updating the KYC details. Banks are set to deactivate or blacklist FASTags with sufficient balances but incomplete KYC after January 31, 2024.

The NHAI has introduced the “One Vehicle, One FASTag” campaign to discourage user practices linking multiple FASTags to a single car or using a single FASTag for multiple vehicles. Launched with the aim of enhancing the efficiency of the Electronic Toll Collection system, the campaign seeks to facilitate a smooth flow at Toll Plazas, as per a Press Information Bureau (PIB) release on January 15, 2024.

Reports of multiple FASTags issued for a single vehicle and instances of FASTags without proper KYC, violating RBI regulations, have prompted NHAI to take action. Deliberate omission of FASTags from a vehicle’s windscreen, causing unnecessary delays at toll booths, has also contributed to this decision.

The NHAI statement emphasises, “To avoid inconvenience, users must ensure that KYC for their latest FASTag is completed. FASTag users are urged to comply with ‘One Vehicle, One FASTag’ and discard all earlier issued FASTags through their respective banks. After January 31, 2024, only the latest FASTag account will remain active, as previous tags will be deactivated or blacklisted. For further assistance or queries, FASTag users can contact the nearest toll plazas or the toll-free customer care number of their respective issuer banks.”
