West Bengal is in shock after a first-year law student was allegedly gang-raped and tortured inside a college campus in South Kolkata. The horrific incident reportedly took place on June 25 at South Calcutta Law College in Kasba. The survivor, 24, accused a practising criminal lawyer and two senior students of assaulting her for hours after she refused a marriage proposal.

According to her complaint filed at Kasba Police Station, the main accused Monojit Mishra, 31, allegedly raped her inside the college premises while Zaib Ahmed (19) and Pramit Mukhopadhyay (20), both third-semester students, acted as lookouts.

Survivor’s Harrowing Account: ‘I fought back… I cried’

The woman detailed a chilling ordeal where she was cornered and dragged into the security guard’s room. She said, “I fought back… I cried and asked him to let me go… I even touched his feet but he didn’t let me go.” She claimed the assault happened after she rejected Mishra’s marriage proposal, stating she was in a relationship.

As per the survivor’s statement, the main college gate was locked, and the security guard was allegedly forced to sit outside as the accused carried out the assault. She also alleged that the act was recorded and she was blackmailed with threats to leak the footage online and harm her boyfriend and parents.

Medical Report Confirms Assault: Bite Marks, Scratches, and Head Injuries

A senior Kolkata Police official confirmed the assault:

“The evidence corroborated what the victim alleged in her complaint… There is evidence of forceful penetration, bite marks and nail scratches on her body.”

The survivor also told police that Mishra hit her with a hockey stick and she suffered a panic attack, requesting an inhaler during the ordeal.

All Three Accused Arrested Under Gang-Rape Charges

Kolkata Police arrested all three men, including Mishra, who was not only a former student of the college but also a temporary non-teaching staff member and a practising lawyer at Alipore Sessions Court.

According to Chief Police Prosecutor Sourin Ghosal, “All persons in a group involved in cases of gang rape must be held liable, even if all of them did not commit the act of rape.”

Accused Allegedly Linked to TMC Student Wing

The assault has triggered a massive political backlash. Reports allege that Mishra was a former unit president of the Trinamool Chhatra Parishad (TMCP), the student wing of the ruling TMC, and still wielded influence on campus. The other two accused are also allegedly TMCP members.

However, TMCP president Trinankur Bhattacharya denied any association: “Mishra was never the organisation’s president… the student body at the college has been defunct for years.” He added that strictest punishment should be given if they are proven guilty.

Opposition Launches Protests, Cites RG Kar Hospital Rape Case

The incident has drawn comparisons to the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College last year. That case had also led to nationwide protests, especially after the alleged attempt to cover it up by a TMC-linked official.

The BJP, Congress, and Left parties have demanded accountability and announced protests. The BJP is seeking Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s response, while the TMC accuses the opposition of exploiting the tragedy politically.
