Kolkata Law College Gangrape: How Crucial Is the 7-Hour CCTV Footage in Solving the Case?

A 24-year-old law student was allegedly gangraped by two senior students and an ex-student within South Calcutta Law College in Kasba locality of Kolkata. The crime was committed on June 25 and reported the following day. CCTV evidence now substantiates the survivor’s version, where she can be seen being dragged away by two accused forcibly to the college campus.

CCTV Footage Confirms Allegations

The CCTV recording from the college entrance catches the woman being dragged by two of the accused inside the building and towards the guardroom, Kolkata Police said. “The CCTV recording is in support of the girl’s complaint. It catches the track of the three accused, the security guard, and the victim. We are scrutinizing the footage,” a police investigating officer said to PTI.

The clip corroborates the survivor’s complaint, where she accused the prime accused Manojit Mishra, of ordering the others to take her to the guard room forcibly. The police informed that the alleged incident occurred within the guard’s room on the college campus.

4 Arrested, Including College Guard

Up to now, Kolkata Police have detained four individuals in the case. They include Manojit Mishra, a graduate of the college; two students at the college, Promit Mukherjee and Zaid Ahmed; and the security guard at the college. Mishra, also a member of the Trinamool Congress’s youth wing, has been charged with raping the woman. The other two are said to have recorded the act so that they could blackmail her later.

The college guard was also arrested for having facilitated the incident. The case is being investigated by a Special Investigation Team (SIT) headed by an Assistant Commissioner.

Rejected Marriage Proposal May Have Triggered Attack

Police officials believe that the gangrape was possibly provoked because the survivor had turned down a marriage proposal from Mishra. “The law college student was gang-raped since she rejected the marriage proposal of the principal accused,” a police official said. The woman had allegedly informed the accused that she was “happy” with her boyfriend and didn’t want to “cheat” him.

The medical report of the survivor established gangrape, stating instances of forced penetration, bite wounds, and nail scratches.

Political Ramifications and Public Indignation

The case has brought about political controversy, notably within the Trinamool Congress (TMC). The TMC member notwithstanding, the party announced that he will not be shielded. Still, the words of party politicians evoked criticism.

MP Kalyan Banerjee commented, “If a friend rapes a friend, how are you going to provide security? Will you have police in schools?” Mitra MLA Madan added, “If that girl hadn’t gone there, this thing wouldn’t have happened.”

TMC MP Mahua Moitra had a strong word against such remarks, saying, “Misogyny in India transcends party lines. We denounce these vile remarks irrespective of who they come from.”

Public demonstrations and political confrontations between the BJP and TMC are escalating as the probe goes on.
