India and Qatar have reinforced their commitment to strengthening trade, energy, and investment ties during the state visit of Amir Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al Thani. The high-level discussions with Prime Minister Narendra Modi also touched upon regional issues and worker welfare.

Focus on Trade and Investment

During a special briefing on the visit, Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) Secretary, CPV & OIA, Arun Kumar Chatterjee, emphasized that while security cooperation is part of the strategic partnership, there is no active defence cooperation between the two nations.

“At this moment, we are not talking about any kind of defence-related cooperation. Our main focus is on trade, energy, and investment,” Chatterjee stated.

Strategic Partnership Agreement

In the presence of PM Modi and Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al Thani, both nations exchanged agreements on a Strategic Partnership, reinforcing their commitment to economic and diplomatic collaboration.

Discussion on Regional Issues

The two leaders also discussed key regional and global issues, including the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict. Both sides expressed their respective positions and exchanged views on the evolving Middle East situation.

Indian Workers’ Welfare in Qatar

Addressing concerns about Indian workers in Qatar, the MEA clarified that a joint working group mechanism exists between the two nations to address labor-related issues. The most recent meeting, held a week ago, did not highlight any concerns regarding worker conditions.

Status of Guru Granth Sahib Swarups

Indian Ambassador to Qatar, Vipul, confirmed that there were no Guru Granth Sahibs in Qatari custody, clearing up concerns about religious scriptures taken by authorities last year.

Warm Welcome for Qatar’s Amir

Earlier in the day, the Amir received a Guard of Honour and a ceremonial welcome at Rashtrapati Bhavan. The discussions at Hyderabad House in New Delhi further strengthened the diplomatic relationship between the two nations.
