Kathmandu [Nepal], March 1 (ANI): India and Nepal are set to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Monday, March 3, in Delhi, aimed at strengthening cooperation in drinking water, sanitation, and hygiene sectors.

Nepal’s Minister for Water Supply, Pradeep Yadav, arrived in Delhi on Saturday to participate in the signing ceremony. The agreement will be signed by Yadav on behalf of Nepal, while India’s Minister for Water Supply, CR Patil, will represent India.

Key Areas of Cooperation

According to Meena Shrestha, Joint Secretary of Nepal’s Water Supply Ministry, the MoU aims to:

  • Develop water resources and ensure better access to clean water
  • Promote sanitation, waste management, and groundwater conservation
  • Facilitate technology exchange, training, and cooperation
  • Encourage rainwater collection and improved infrastructure

“The agreement is expected to strengthen Nepal’s efforts in water management and sanitation, benefiting both nations through shared expertise,” Shrestha told ANI over the phone.

Strategic Collaboration

During his official visit to India, Minister Pradeep Yadav will also hold discussions with NITI Aayog and visit water-related projects across the country.

A recent cabinet meeting in Nepal approved the visit, emphasizing the importance of the agreement in advancing sustainable water management.

Nepal’s Progress in Water and Sanitation

According to a UNICEF report, Nepal has made significant progress in water and sanitation access:

  • 95% of Nepali households now have access to improved water sources, up from 46% in 1990
  • 62% of households use improved sanitation facilities, compared to 6% in 1990

Despite challenges like poverty and tough terrains, Nepal has worked to improve water and sanitation conditions, with India’s support further enhancing these efforts.
