The Delhi Police Special Cell has dismantled an interstate gang of criminals from Mewat involved in ATM break-ins across Delhi, the National Capital Region, and other states. The apprehended kingpin is identified as Mohd Jahid (31), a resident of Haryana’s Nuh (Mewat). He was caught while en route to Guwahati for an ATM break-in in Assam, accompanied by associates already present there.
DCP Special Cell Alok Kumar revealed that the Special Cell received specific information about Mohd Jahid’s arrival at Palam, New Delhi, on December 25. A team was formed, and a trap was set around Red Light, Palam Airport, resulting in the successful apprehension of Mohd Jahid.
The accused had been declared a Proclaimed Offender in a case under Section 380 of the Indian Penal Code at Geeta Colony police station in New Delhi. An FIR has also been filed against him under Section 25 of the Arms Act.
It was discovered that Jahid and his associates recently stole Rs 7.5 lakh from an ATM booth in the Welcome area of Delhi, leading to a case being filed.
Discussing the gang’s modus operandi, the DCP explained that they targeted unguarded ATM booths in dimly lit and isolated areas. After identifying their targets, they conducted thorough reconnaissance, blackening CCTV cameras upon entry.
The gang members wore face masks and monkey caps to conceal their identities while using gas cutters to cut the machines and retrieve cash trays.
The gang members utilized stolen cars with fake number plates during the commission of crimes, according to Kumar. Upon interrogation, the accused revealed that he and his associates had committed an ATM theft in the Welcome area of Delhi on December 1, making off with Rs 7.5 lakh from the scene.
