Former Chief Minister Atishi was made the Leader of Opposition in the Delhi Assembly on Sunday. The decision was made in a legislative meeting with all Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLAs present, including party leader Arvind Kejriwal and the 22 elected lawmakers.
Atishi has become the first woman to assume the role in the Delhi Assembly.
Delhi Assembly Session to Commence on February 24
The first sitting of the newly constituted Delhi Assembly will be held on February 24. The three-day sitting is likely to witness the tabling of outstanding Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) reports, which are said to reflect discrepancies during the previous AAP regime’s rule.
Earlier this month, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) regained power in Delhi by winning 48 of the 70 seats, whereas AAP won 22 seats. The Congress did not open its account. AAP top leaders Arvind Kejriwal and Manish Sisodia lost the elections.
New Speaker and CAG Report to be Presented
On February 24, oath of office will be taken by the MLAs, and a new Speaker will be designated. BJP leader Vijender Gupta has been proposed for the Speaker’s position, while Arvinder Singh Lovely will hold the post of pro-tem Speaker.
February 25, which is the second day of the session, will be a significant day, with the CAG report to be tabled. The report purportedly details alleged corruption and fiscal mismanagement of the previous AAP government in aspects like the excise policy, education department, and refurbishing of the old Chief Minister’s residence—”Sheesh Mahal” according to BJP leaders.
BJP MLA Harish Khurana said, “The report will be placed in the House and many things will be exposed. I believe the truth will surface in the CAG report. Whether it is education, alcohol, or Sheesh Mahal, a lot of such issues will be brought to the House.”
