Significance of Muharram and Ashura
Muharram, the month which is second most sacred in the Islamic calendar, after Ramadan, started on June 27 this year. Muslims, particularly Shia people, commemorate the first ten days mourning the martyrdom of Hazrat Imam Hussain, the Prophet Muhammad’s grandson, who was martyred in the Battle of Karbala in 680 AD.
The peak of the mourning is on Ashura when there are processions in which the followers carry symbolic Tazias.
