The final season of Squid Game has taken Netflix by storm, becoming the platform’s biggest OTT release ever. Within just three days, Squid Game Season 3 racked up over 60.1 million views and a staggering 368.4 million hours watched, according to The Guardian. While Season 2 had slightly more views (68 million), it took an extra day to hit that number. With these figures, Season 3 is now ranked as the ninth biggest non-English series, trailing just behind the first two seasons.
Squid Game 3 Sets Netflix Record, Fincher Remake Rumours Swirl
As buzz around the finale grows, new rumours suggest director David Fincher may be working on an English-language remake. Known for previous collaborations with Netflix, Fincher’s involvement is still unofficial. The show’s final scene — featuring a tense face-off between The Front Man and an unexpected American recruiter played by Oscar-winner Cate Blanchett — only intensified the speculation.
Hwang Dong-hyuk Addresses Fincher Remake Talk
Responding to the rumours, creator Hwang Dong-hyuk clarified that the finale wasn’t made to launch a spin-off. “Honestly, I haven’t heard officially from Netflix about David Fincher creating a Squid Game,” he told Variety. “I have heard the rumours, of course, though. But, again, it was just the ending that I wanted for Season 3.”
Hwang revealed that the original ending had protagonist Seong Gi-hun surviving. Casting Blanchett, he said, was a creative decision made for impact: “I’ve always been a big fan of Cate Blanchett, and all of my producers are as well. They really wanted her. As for offering the role to the particular actor, that happened after we began shooting.”
The director hinted there’s a deeper meaning in the finale, leaving viewers to interpret it themselves. Regarding future Squid Game projects, Hwang said he’d be open to consulting on a US version if needed. However, he wouldn’t want to be fully involved unless it was another season of the original.
“Having said that, if Netflix asks and if I feel like my contribution is needed, then as long as it’s not something that would interfere with whatever I’m working on at that time, I would be happy to provide what they need from me,” he added.
