Academy Award-winning Hollywood actress Kate Winslet is making her directorial debut with ‘Goodbye June,’ a Netflix original feature film. Winslet will not only be directing but will also be producing and acting in the movie, along with an ensemble cast that includes Toni Collette, Johnny Flynn, Andrea Riseborough, Timothy Spall, and Helen Mirren.

The film, which is a heartfelt but comedic drama, centers around a family of estranged siblings who must deal with an unexpected crisis. The script, which has been written by Winslet’s son Joe Anders, will be produced in the UK, where production is about to start.

Kate’s Directorial Debut

The Hollywood Reporter stated that Winslet has long been urged to become a director but did not out of commitment issues. Yet she feels pressure now to assume the task and be a part of changing Hollywood’s women-friendly culture.

During her conversation with Elizabeth Day on the How to Fail podcast, she revealed that she now feels responsible for motivating and guiding more female directors. Winslet’s most recent project with producer Kate Solomon, the producer of her recent film Lee, solidifies her move into film production.

‘Lee,’ a biographical film on war photographer Lee Miller, has earned Winslet a Golden Globe nomination and a BAFTA nomination for Outstanding British Film.

Her latest work also features the HBO series The Regime, in which she was nominated for a Golden Globe again, making her one of the few actresses to be nominated for two roles within the same awards season.

Netflix Drama

Netflix calls ‘Goodbye June’ a gripping family drama with a mix of intense emotions and light-hearted moments. Winslet’s foray into directing occurs when Hollywood is experiencing a wave of female-driven projects, and she hopes to encourage more women to move behind the camera.

She was confident in her ability to direct the project, citing years of experience on film sets and increasing technical expertise.

Directed by Winslet herself, ‘Goodbye June’ is likely to be an award-winning film that unites an all-star cast and heartwarming script with one of the most prominent stars of Hollywood.
