Amid growing criticism over her views on transgender issues, author J.K. Rowling has publicly supported the upcoming Harry Potter series on HBO, set to release in 2026.
Rowling Praises the Script
On X (formerly Twitter), Rowling shared her excitement about the show. “I read the first two episodes of the forthcoming HBO Harry Potter series and they are SO, SO, SO GOOD!” she wrote.
Although she isn’t writing the script herself, Rowling confirmed, “No, but I’ve worked closely with the extremely talented writers.”
Show Moves Forward Amid Backlash
Even though many fans have called for a boycott due to Rowling’s anti-transgender stance, HBO and Warner Bros. Discovery are continuing with the project. The series is now in production phase.
HBO Defends Its Decision
Casey Bloys, Chairman and CEO of HBO, defended the network’s ongoing collaboration with Rowling.
“The decision to be in business with J.K. Rowling is not new for us,” he said in an interview, adding, “We’ve been in business for 25 years.”
He also noted that HBO already airs C.B. Strike, another Rowling-based show.
Addressing concerns, Bloys clarified, “Harry Potter is not secretly being infused with anything. If you want to debate her, you can go on Twitter.”
Rowling’s Creative Role
Rowling is serving as executive producer through her company Bronte Film and TV. Reports say she was involved from the start, including the pitch meetings, to ensure the series reflects her original vision.
Despite her past statements on trans rights, HBO insists the show will stay true to the original themes.
“Our priority is what’s on the screen,” Bloys said. “The Harry Potter story is incredibly affirmative and positive and about love and self-acceptance.”
Ongoing Industry Criticism
However, backlash continues. Over 400 actors, writers, and activists have signed a letter urging the UK entertainment industry to respond to Rowling’s views.
Among them is Paapa Essiedu, who plays Professor Snape in the upcoming series. He openly supports trans rights and has voiced concern over Rowling’s influence on the show.
