What Charges Does Combs Face?

Combs has pleaded not guilty to five major felony charges:

• One count of racketeering conspiracy

• Two counts of sex trafficking by force, fraud, or coercion

• Two counts of transportation to engage in prostitution

Prosecutors say Combs organized sex parties where women were pressured or forced to take part. They claim he used threats, drugs, and hired male sex workers to control the victims. The government also accuses him of using violence, blackmail, and arson to cover up crimes.

In this case, prosecutors say Combs led a group that helped him plan or hide criminal acts for 20 years. This group allegedly included bodyguards, assistants, and staff.

To prove racketeering, the government must show that a criminal group existed and carried out repeated crimes. These crimes reportedly included sex trafficking, bribery, kidnapping, and arson.

Key Video and Witness Testimonies

One major piece of evidence was a 2016 security video. It showed Combs attacking his former girlfriend, Cassie, in a Los Angeles hotel. Cassie, whose real name is Casandra Ventura, said she was trying to leave one of Combs’ sex events—known as “freak-offs” or “hotel nights”—when he beat her.

Jurors also saw explicit video clips of sexual acts. Some showed Cassie. Others involved another woman, referred to only as “Jane.”

Both women gave emotional testimony.

Cassie’s Story

Cassie testified for four days. She said she dated Combs from 2007 to 2018. During that time, she said he pressured her into hundreds of sex events involving hired sex workers. She said she often felt she couldn’t say no.

In 2023, Cassie filed a lawsuit against Combs, accusing him of years of abuse. He settled the case in less than 24 hours. After that, dozens of other women came forward with similar lawsuits.

Jane’s Testimony

Jane testified for six days. She said she had a relationship with Combs from 2021 until his arrest in September 2023. She claimed he forced her into sex marathons with strangers while he watched.

The Associated Press doesn’t normally name sexual abuse victims unless they go public. Cassie chose to speak openly, so her name is included.

Text Messages and Other Evidence

The jury also heard text message conversations read by a Homeland Security agent. These texts came from Combs and others close to him. Some included disturbing language and details that matched witness testimony.

In total, 34 witnesses testified during the trial—all of them called by the prosecution. Combs did not take the stand in his own defense.

Not the First Time

This isn’t the first time Paris has had to defend her way of honouring her father. In August 2023, she spoke up after fans questioned why she didn’t post anything for what would have been Michael Jackson’s 65th birthday.

The upcoming Michael Jackson biopic titled Michael, directed by Antoine Fuqua and starring Jaafar Jackson, is expected to be delayed to 2026, according to a Variety report.

CEO Confirms Possible Delay

During Lionsgate’s fourth-quarter earnings call for fiscal year 2025, CEO Jon Feltheimer gave an update about the much-anticipated film. He said the studio was thrilled with the footage shot so far and hinted that the release could be pushed to a later date.

“In regard to our Michael Jackson biopic, we’re excited about the 3 1/2 hours of amazing footage from producer Graham King and director Antoine Fuqua, and we will be announcing a definitive release strategy & timing in the next few weeks,” Feltheimer said, as quoted by Variety. “I would note that it is likely we will move Michael out of the fiscal year which will impact fiscal '26 financial results but will bolster an already strong fiscal '27 slate.” Since the fiscal year ends on March 31, 2026, Feltheimer’s comment suggests the film will likely release sometime after April 1, 2026.

Initial Release Plans Shift

Originally, the biopic was scheduled to hit theatres on October 3, 2025. However, last month Variety reported that the studio might split the film into two parts and postpone the release. The delay would move it beyond the original date and into the next fiscal year.

Production Progress and Script Revisions

Even though the main filming was completed in May 2024, the movie isn’t quite finished. According to Variety, screenwriter John Logan is currently revising the script, and reshoots are expected to follow.

Michael was a highlight at Lionsgate’s CinemaCon presentation in 2023, but no new footage was shown during the 2024 event.

The film features Jaafar Jackson—Michael Jackson’s real-life nephew—in the lead role, marking his screen debut. Other well-known actors have also joined the cast:

A Flawed But Beloved Character of Sydney Sweeney

Speaking about Cassie, Sydney Sweeney said, “I have such a spot in my heart for Cassie, and I hold her really close and dear. She is crazy. She makes so many mistakes. People do have a hard time separating actors from their characters, and especially someone like Cassie, where she is hated and she’s loved, but she’s definitely a complicated character. And so I think that that could confuse people, for sure. But if they’re hating me for decisions that my character is making, then I’m playing the character correctly,” she added.

What Lies Ahead in Season 3

Sydney Sweeney was nominated for an Emmy for her Season 2 work on Euphoria. Season 3 is filming. Euphoria is written by and starring Sam Levinson, as well as Zendaya, Hunter Schafer, Maude Apatow, Alexa Demie, and Jacob Elordi. The series initially aired in 2019 to great critical acclaim and then resumed for season two in 2022. Season two concluded with a dramatic school play that culminated in a showdown.
