American R&B singer Chris Brown was detained in Britain on Thursday in relation to an alleged attack on a London club in 2023, reports several British media websites.

Brown, 36, was allegedly held in the early hours of Thursday at Manchester’s Lowry Hotel. The arrest follows an altercation on February 2023, when Brown allegedly confronted music producer Abe Diaw with a bottle at Tape nightclub in Mayfair, one of London’s most upscale areas.

The Metropolitan Police confirmed a 36-year-old man was detained on suspicion of grievous bodily harm, although they did not officially identify the man. “A 36-year-old man was arrested at a Manchester hotel shortly after 2am on Thursday, 15 May on suspicion of grievous bodily harm,” said a spokesperson for AFP. “He has been brought into custody where he is still.

Reports say Brown had arrived in Manchester via private jet on Wednesday afternoon and was scheduled to perform several concerts in the UK next month.

The Grammy-winning singer first became famous in the mid-2000s for his soulful R&B singing and energetic performances. But his career has been marred by a history of run-ins with the law, most famously his 2009 conviction for attacking then-girlfriend Rihanna before that year’s Grammys a case that made headlines worldwide and severely tarnished his public image.

Brown has since been involved in other legal troubles throughout the years, such as for assault and violent actions. His recent arrest just contributes to a line of controversies that still surround his career.

The investigation is currently ongoing, and Brown’s representatives have not publicly spoken on the arrest yet.
