In a major step, Sweden has revealed its intention to provide a maximum of eight Jas Gripen fighter aircraft to NATO’s air policing mission in Poland. This move, which represents Sweden’s first deployment of fighter jets for NATO beyond its territory, was made public one day ahead of the first anniversary of Sweden’s membership in NATO.
Supporting NATO’s Defense Efforts
Swedish Foreign Minister Maria Malmer Stenergard highlighted the nation’s dedication to enhancing NATO’s air defense and logistical support for Ukraine.
“We suggest that Sweden contribute a maximum of eight JAS Gripen with accompanying personnel, such as combat command and support units,” Reuters reported Stenergard saying at a press conference.
She continued, “In addition, the government suggests that Sweden contribute air and naval surveillance capabilities and airborne transport capability.”
A Historic First for Sweden
Sweden formally became a member of NATO on March 7, 2024, after Russia launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine. This is a historic first as the nation integrates deeper into the defense plans of the alliance.
By joining NATO’s air policing mission in Poland, Sweden is affirming its pledge to collective security in the region.
