A Russian drone crashed into a residential 21 story high-rise building in Odesa on Saturday, killing two and injuring no less than 14, including children, Ukrainian officials have confirmed. Firefighters rushed to quell the fire, and civilians evacuated via smoke-filled stairwells. The bombing came as peace talks stalled in the nearly 3.5 year war.
Civilian Toll and Emergency Response
Odesa Governor Oleh Kiper said three children were injured, with one in critical condition. He also said two bodies were removed from the rubble, later confirmed to be a married couple. First responders shared video of firefighters fighting fires and assisting residents in evacuating through smoke-filled hallways.
Ukraine reported a surge in drone and missile attacks over the past few weeks, coinciding with a diplomatic lull that has stalled efforts to bring the war to a close. The attack on Odesa fits into a larger trend, on June 10, a wholesale aerial bombing raids was conducted—including 315 russian drones—against Kyiv, Odesa, and other urban centers, killing several and interdicting civilian services.

The attack damaged some of the high rise’s floors as well as infrastructure close by. Fires also erupted on the 7th to 9th floors, and people were evacuated from lower floors. Authorities reported casualties in Kherson due to ongoing shelling and missile fire.
