Pope Leo XIV Urges Israel to Open Gaza to Aid, Calls Situation ‘Worrying and Painful’

Pope Leo XIV delivered a stirring speech and made a powerful plea at his first general audience in St. Peter’s Square on May 21, 2025. He urges Israel to allow humanitarian aid to enter the Gaza Strip. Healso  emphasized the growing crisis and the fact that the sick, older ones, and children are the groups most affected.

The Pope emphasized the need for quick action by calling the situation “worrying and painful” signifying the urgency of immediate action.

Clear Message of Compassion

Pope Leo XIV has made peace and human dignity a priority ever since he was elected on May 8. “I renew my heartfelt appeal to allow the entry of sufficient humanitarian aid and to put an end to the hostilities, the heartbreaking price of which is paid by children, the older ones, and the sick,” he said during his speech.

His remarks reaffirmed the Vatican’s ongoing dedication to moral leadership and international solidarity. His focus on compassion also establishes a powerful tone for his pontificate.

Gaza’s Deepening Humanitarian Crisis

Since Israel imposed a complete blockade on Gaza on March 2, the situation there has gotten worse. Food, medication, and other necessities are severely in short supply as a result of this blockade. Humanitarian organizations swiftly denounced the measure after Israel declared on May 20 that it would permit some aid to pass.

For example, Médecins Sans Frontières and the United Nations referred to the aid as inadequate. Indeed, no aid had reached civilians by May 21, according to UN officials. The authorized shipments, according to one UN spokesperson, are “a drop in the ocean.” It is obvious that urgent needs are not being met by the current aid effort.

World Leaders Increase Pressure on Israel

Leaders around the world have begun to act more forcefully in response. British PM Keir Starmer called in the Israeli ambassador and halted free trade negotiations with Israel. PM Benjamin Netanyahu was urged to stop the military offensive by US President Donald Trump. Additionally, he pledged that the US would help Gaza with humanitarian aid.

Israeli officials declared their intention to step up their military campaign in spite of international pleas. They contended that Hamas might misuse aid. Hamas, however, has refuted these charges. The situation for Gaza’s citizens has gotten worse as a result of this back and forth, which has increased tensions even more.

Moral Imperative for Swift Action

Pope Leo XIV’s appeal now emphasizes the importance of global moral responsibility. He focused on children, the older ones, and the sick because they are the most vulnerable to this crisis. As the humanitarian crisis worsens, the Pope’s message urges a prompt and compassionate response.

In addition, a global decision must be made based on empathy and collaboration. Conversation and action, not inaction, can save lives. The time to act is now.
