Prime Minister Narendra Modi will embark on a historic three-nation tour on June 15, visiting Cyprus, Canada, and Croatia, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said on Saturday. The diplomatic tour will also involve his visit to the G7 Summit as well as two major bilateral interactions in Europe.

First Stop: Cyprus After Two Decades

PM Modi will visit Cyprus on June 15-16 at the invitation of President Nikos Christodoulides. As per the MEA, “This will be the first visit of an Indian prime minister to Cyprus in more than two decades.”

The Prime Minister will have official talks with President Christodoulides during his trip to Nicosia. He would also be engaging with key business leaders in the port city of Limassol.

“The visit will reaffirm the two countries’ shared commitment to enhancing bilateral relations and enhancing India’s outreach to the Mediterranean region and the European Union,” the MEA stated in a press release.

Modi to Attend G7 Summit in Canada

The second leg of the trip will take PM Modi to Kananaskis, Canada, from June 16-17, where he will participate in the G7 Summit at the invitation of Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney.

This marks Modi’s sixth consecutive attendance at the G7, showcasing India’s growing voice in major global affairs.

“On the Summit, the prime minister will exchange views with leaders of G-7 nations, other outreach countries invited and heads of international organizations on key issues facing the world, such as energy security, technology and innovation, particularly the AI-energy connection and Quantum-related issues,” the MEA stated.

Apart from the multilateral interactions, PM Modi will also have a number of bilateral meetings during the sidelines of the summit with other global leaders.

Historic First Visit to Croatia

For the last leg of his diplomatic tour, PM Modi will visit Croatia on June 18, the first ever visit by an Indian Prime Minister there. He will hold talks with Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenković and President Zoran Milanović.

The MEA highlighted the importance of this tour leg: “This will mark an important milestone in the bilateral relationship.”

The Croatian visit would also strengthen India’s strategic engagement with the European Union nations. As per the MEA, “The visit to Croatia will also underscore India’s commitment to further strengthening its engagement with partners in the European Union.”

Strategic Importance of the Tour

This three-country tour occurs when India is looking to deepen its economic and diplomatic relations in Europe and reassert its leadership position on the world stage through high-level summits such as the G7.

Every part of the journey — from the Eastern Mediterranean to Western Europe — has symbolic significance, as well as practical possibilities for new commerce, technology, and strategic partnerships.

While Prime Minister Modi has both multilateral and bilateral meetings, India’s foreign policy interests, particularly in areas of technology, energy, and regional cooperation, are expected to be central.
