Geneva [Switzerland]: External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, in his address at the 58th session of the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC), reiterated India’s dedication to human rights, democracy, and global cooperation.

Jaishankar emphasized that India’s commitment to human rights is deeply embedded in its values of global unity, openness, and mutual respect. He stated that these principles form the foundation of India’s constitutional framework, which guarantees fundamental rights while upholding justice, liberty, and equality.

India’s Continued Cooperation with UNHRC

Highlighting India’s active participation in the UNHRC, Jaishankar reaffirmed the country’s support for the Office of the High Commissioner and various council mechanisms.

“As an Observer in the Council this year, India remains firmly committed to working alongside all members and observers to protect and promote human rights for all,” he said.

Jaishankar assured that India will continue extending its cooperation with initiatives such as Special Procedures and the Universal Periodic Review.

2024 Lok Sabha Elections: A Testament to Democracy

The External Affairs Minister also highlighted India’s pluralistic and progressive ethos, citing the successful conduct of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. He pointed out that over 100 crore people from diverse backgrounds exercised their right to vote, showcasing India’s democratic strength.

“India’s general elections allowed one-eighth of the world’s population to cast their vote. Our rich diversity is bound by a millennia-old tradition of coexistence and human dignity,” Jaishankar added.

He emphasized that this ethos drives India’s engagements within the UNHRC, fostering dialogue, mutual understanding, and collective progress.

India’s Inclusive Growth and Social Progress

Jaishankar highlighted how inclusive policies have played a crucial role in India’s socio-economic progress. He noted that India has made significant strides in poverty alleviation, access to clean drinking water, and housing for marginalized communities.

“Rooted in inclusivity, India’s economic growth has lifted millions out of poverty while ensuring that no one is left behind,” he said.

Advancements in Infrastructure and Legal Reforms

Discussing India’s development, Jaishankar pointed out the nation’s unprecedented infrastructure expansion, digital advancements, and legal reforms.

“Technological innovations, new criminal laws, and good governance have laid the foundation for sustainable development. Education continues to empower future generations,” he remarked.
