Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced a significant Cabinet reshuffle on Tuesday. This change comes shortly after his recent election victory. Carney, who succeeded Justin Trudeau earlier this year, said the new team will deliver on his promises.

Key Appointments and Reassignments

Carney appointed Anita Anand as the new foreign minister. Previously, she served as the defence minister. She replaced Mélanie Joly, who now oversees the industry portfolio.

Meanwhile, François-Philippe Champagne will continue as finance minister. In addition, Dominic LeBlanc stays in charge of U.S. trade, a critical role during the ongoing trade dispute with Washington.

A New Strategy Toward the U.S.

Carney ran for office on a bold promise. He vowed to push back against what he called the aggressive stance of U.S. President Donald Trump. At the same time, he offered steady leadership shaped by his experience leading central banks in Canada and the U.K.

“Canadians elected this new government with a strong mandate to define a new economic and security relationship with the United States and to build a stronger economy for all Canadians,” Carney said.

King’s Speech to Set Agenda

Looking ahead, Carney said King Charles III will deliver a speech on May 27. The address will outline the government’s priorities as Parliament returns. Since Canada is part of the British Commonwealth, the monarch remains its official head of state.

Breaking Away from Old U.S. Ties

According to Carney, the traditional relationship between Canada and the U.S. has ended. He emphasized Canada’s historical ties with the U.K. and France. He believes the country must chart a new course in international relations.

Ministers Removed and Replaced

Carney dropped more than ten members from Trudeau’s previous Cabinet. Among them was former defence minister Bill Blair. David McGuinty, who led the public safety ministry, now takes over as defence minister.

New Faces in Economic Portfolios

Tim Hodgson, former CEO of Goldman Sachs Canada, now leads the natural resources ministry. Notably, Carney also worked at Goldman Sachs for 14 years. He has stated his goal is to make Canada an energy “superpower” and to launch major “nation building” projects.

AI Gets a Dedicated Ministry

Interestingly, Carney created a new ministry for artificial intelligence. He named former journalist Evan Solomon as Canada’s first AI minister.

Gender Balance Maintained

Just like Trudeau, Carney ensured that women make up half of his Cabinet. This move signals his commitment to gender equality in leadership.

Delivering on the People’s Mandate

In conclusion, Carney said the new Cabinet reflects the change Canadians asked for. The Liberal Party, now in its fourth term, aims to reshape both Canada’s economy and its global role.
