Kajol and Ajay Devgn may be Bollywood royalty, but behind the scenes, they keep it real and far from the idea of perfect romance. Married since 1999, the couple has been going strong for over two decades, but Kajol now admits their relationship works because they’re “completely different.”
In an interview with Mashable India, Kajol said, “Ajay and I are completely different otherwise hum logo ko itne saal nahi lagte (we would have separated long before).”
She hilariously revealed the mantra that has kept them going for 26 years. “I say this quite often that the secret to happy marriage is partial deafness and selective amnesia. You really need to forget certain things about your partner and sometimes unhearing things they said. It is very important.”
Kajol: No Fancy Date Nights, Just Real Life
While many couples swear by date nights to keep the spark alive, Kajol and Ajay keep things simple. “We don’t have date nights and all that. Hum yeh sab nahi karte hai (We don’t do all this),” Kajol said.
She explained that they barely get time together due to their busy schedules, so when they do, they spend it with their family.
“Either he is working or travelling or I am working or travelling. So whenever we find some time, we try and stay at home with everybody else,” she shared.
When asked if their bond was more like friends than lovers, she replied with a laugh, “Kitne saal hogaye shadi ke (We have been married for too long), you can’t expect me to blush when I am talking about him.”
Speaking to Instant Bollywood earlier, she admitted that Ajay’s dedication to work has become part of their reality. “Sometimes I feel like, ‘Acha hua 40 din ka outdoor hai’, and sometimes I feel like, ‘Damn, you should have been here for this’,” Kajol said, adding, “He is very passionate about his work.”
The couple shares two children, daughter Nysa and son Yug, and continue to redefine what a long-lasting marriage really looks like.
