Amruta Subhash, the National Award-winning actress known for her roles in Gully Boy and Sacred Games, was recently seen in Chidiya alongside Vinay Pathak and Svar Kamble, and she shared an incident where veteran actor Naseeruddin Shah scolded her after watching her in a play. The incident took place after Shah watched her perform in a play called Trishna.
Amruta Subhash recounted that she was particularly proud of a scene where she would cry and consistently elicit applause from the audience. She felt that she was doing wonders and was filled with pride. However, when Naseeruddin Shah watched the play twice, he had a different perspective.
After the show, Shah approached her with a concerned expression. Subhash, expecting praise, was taken aback when Shah said, “Beta, I am concerned”.
He explained that he had watched both shows and noticed that she was repeating the same actions to earn applause.
Shah then said in a stern voice, “I would rather see you failing doing something new rather than doing the same thing again and again for claps, okay?”.
He questioned whether the character even needed to cry and said that she was forcing herself on the character, preventing it from exploring anything new. He warned her that she would become repetitive as an actor and that her career would be over.
Subhash admitted that this scolding was a transformative moment for her. It made her realize that she was prioritizing applause over artistic exploration. Since then, she has taken Shah’s advice to heart, constantly seeking to challenge herself and explore new facets of her craft.
