Once considered to be one of Bollywood’s biggest stars, Govinda has been absent from the film scene for years, and his wife Sunita Ahuja believes she knows why. In a recent conversation with The Powerful Humans, Sunita didn’t hold back as she criticised the people currently surrounding the actor, accusing them of being sycophants who never tell him the truth.
‘They Only Say Wah, Wah’: Sunita Slams Govinda’s Inner Circle
“Why has Govinda not been seen in 17 years? The problem is that his circle is the wrong one. It’s a wrong circle,” Sunita said. She added, “Today, my fights with him are because I can’t lie, and I do not appreciate flattery.”
Without naming names, Sunita pointed to four people who she believes are not helping his career grow. “Today he has four people – a writer, a musician, a secretary and a lawyer friend. They are of no use. They only say ‘wah, wah!’ If he makes music, they say ‘wah, wah… kalam kar diya.’ They should tell him the truth. When I tell him the truth, he gets upset.”
Stuck in the 90s, Out of Touch in 2025
Sunita also said that Govinda continues trying to recreate the kind of work that made him a superstar in the 90s, something she thinks no longer resonates. “I tell him the 90s era is over. It is 2025. Look at what’s working on Netflix and digital platforms. But he stays with his ‘wah, wah’ production,” she said. “I told him, change your circle. For as long as you have these 4–5 people, they won’t let you go forward.”
Govinda, known for hits like Raja Babu, Coolie No. 1, Hero No. 1, and Haseena Maan Jayegi, began to see his stardom fade in the early 2000s. Although he made a brief return with a few films in the late 2000s, his career has been declining steadily, with no film releases since 2019’s Rangeela Raja, which failed at the box office.
