Actor Chandan Roy, who won hearts with his debut role in the hit web series Panchayat, recently spoke about what made the show so popular among Indian audiences.
What ‘Panchayat’ Is About
Panchayat is a comedy-drama series that stars Jitendra Kumar, Raghubir Yadav, and Neena Gupta. Chandan Roy plays Vikas Shukla, a quirky and relatable office assistant working at a village council office in the fictional town of Phulera.
Simplicity Is the Secret Ingredient
In an interview with ANI, Chandan explained that the show’s simplicity stood out in a world filled with loud and flashy Bollywood films. Using a food metaphor, he said, “That is its simplicity. Right? You can’t eat masala and all these things every day. You will have to come back to rice, lentils and khichdi. And I have given such an example, don’t think of me as a chef,” he joked.
He added that being simple and natural helps characters connect better with viewers.
Characters Feel Real and Familiar
Another reason for the show’s popularity, according to Chandan, is how relatable the characters are. “In Panchayat, what I feel is that all its characters, you feel that these are from around my house, or you start seeing yourself in it. I think this is the best and most beautiful thing about Panchayat,” he said.
He pointed out how the story doesn’t follow the usual movie trend of heroes dancing in far-off places. Instead, it shows everyday moments like meeting at a photo studio or eating samosas — scenes that feel real to common people. “This story feels very personal. I think this can be the reason behind the love that Panchayat received,” he added.
Season 4 Is His Personal Favourite
Panchayat Season 4 is scheduled to premiere on Amazon Prime Video on June 24, and Chandan Roy says it’s his favourite season so far. “So, it’s coming on the 24th. I think it will come till the night of the 23rd. So, just watch, and you’ll know what’s going to happen and what’s not,” he teased. “But yes, I want to share one thing with all of you. Season 4… Personally, it’s my favourite. More than Season 1, 2, and 3. I’m not saying this just because I want you to watch it. I’m genuinely saying it,” Chandan stated.
A Glimpse Into Season 4
Without revealing too much, Chandan hinted at what makes the new season different. “There’s a twist. I mean, the nature of Panchayat, its essence, is that this time we’re playing around a lot more. We’re blowing small things out of proportion,” he said.
He explained that Season 4 will explore everyday village elements more deeply — such as gossip under the peepal tree, conversations near the betel leaf shop, and tea stall chats — especially drawing inspiration from life in North India. “We’re bringing all these elements much more into season 4. So, I hope you will really enjoy it.” The series is directed by Deepak Kumar Mishra.
