Australia’s air traffic control agency has notified airlines regarding reports of live-fire exercises happening off the country’s east coast, where a Chinese naval task group has been operating. Australian officials validated the warning on Friday.
A contingent from the People’s Liberation Army Navy (PLAN), consisting of a frigate, cruiser, and a supply vessel, recently entered Australia’s maritime zone. The fleet traveled down the east coast while being closely observed by the air and naval forces of both Australia and New Zealand.
Precautionary Measures for Flights
In light of reports of live firing in international waters, Airservices Australia mentioned, “The Civil Aviation Authority and Airservices Australia are aware of reports of live firing in international waters. ”
“We have advised airlines with flights scheduled in the region as a precaution,” the agency continued.
Following the advisory, Qantas and its budget affiliate Jetstar have modified certain flight paths across the Tasman Sea between Australia and New Zealand while maintaining vigilant oversight of the situation.
Government Responds to the Situation
Foreign Minister Penny Wong acknowledged the fluid nature of the situation, confirming that “It is, as I understand it, operating in international waters. ”
She continued, “We will be discussing this with the Chinese, and we already have at officials level, regarding the notice provided and the transparency that has been offered concerning these exercises, particularly the live-fire activities. ”
China’s Notification to Australia
As reported by The Sydney Morning Herald, China notified Australian officials on Friday that it would be conducting live-fire drills off the coast of New South Wales.
