Russian President Vladimir Putin reignited global outrage with a bold statement. While speaking at Russia’s top investment event in St. Petersburg, he said, “I consider the Russian and Ukrainian people to be one nation. In this sense, all of Ukraine is ours.”

As a result, his comment sparked applause from Russian officials and business leaders. However, it alarmed Ukraine and the international community. Putin added, “There is an old rule. Where a Russian soldier sets foot, that is ours.”

Clearly, Putin’s words rejected Ukraine’s sovereignty and exposed his broader territorial ambitions.

Moscow’s Message Now Contradicts Its Peace Signals

Until recently, Moscow projected a more diplomatic tone. This shift came as US President Donald Trump called for a peace agreement. Consequently, the Kremlin tried to show openness to negotiation.

However, Putin’s latest comments contradict this image. Instead of continuing a softer approach, he returned to hardline rhetoric.

Putin Resumes Nuclear Threats Against Ukraine

Moreover, for the first time in months, Putin issued a nuclear warning. When asked how Russia would respond if Ukraine used a dirty bomb, he gave a chilling answer.

“This would be a colossal mistake on the part of those whom we call neo-Nazis on the territory of today’s Ukraine,” he said. “It could be their last mistake.” He also warned, “We always respond and respond in kind. Therefore, our response will be very tough.”

Previously, under U.S. President Joe Biden, Russia often issued nuclear threats. However, those threats stopped once Trump returned to office. Now, Putin’s words suggest that Moscow no longer worries about Trump’s reaction.

Trump Remains Silent

Meanwhile, tensions between Iran and Israel continue to grow. At the same time, Trump appears less engaged in the Russia-Ukraine conflict. Instead, he seems more focused on rebuilding relations with Moscow.

So far, neither Trump nor Ukrainian officials have responded to Putin’s remarks.
