Pacer Akash Deep delivered a stellar performance in India’s second Test match against England at Edgbaston. He took 10 wickets, including 6 in the second innings, leading India to a massive 336-run victory that leveled the five-match series at 1-1. After the game, he revealed that he dedicated his match-winning effort to his elder sister, Akhand Jyoti Singh, who is currently undergoing cancer treatment.
A Star on the Field
Akash Deep dominated the second innings by removing Ben Duckett, Joe Root, Ollie Pope, Harry Brook, Jamie Smith, and Brydon Carse. Despite Jasprit Bumrah’s absence, Akash proved his capability and outperformed every other bowler on both sides.
Sister Speaks on the Emotional Tribute
In an interview with Aaj Tak, Akash’s sister said, “I had no idea Akash would say something like that,” referring to his public dedication. She added that “maybe we weren’t ready to talk about it publicly,” but acknowledged, “the way he became emotional and said it for me—it’s a big deal.”
She felt proud of her brother, saying, “It shows how much he loves our family and me.” She noted that “given the situation at home, and still performing like that… it’s a huge thing.” She also said, “I’m the one he is closest to.”
Video Calls and Brotherly Support
Akash Deep stayed connected with his sister even after the match. She shared, “After the match ended, we spoke twice over video call, and again at 5 AM in the morning.” According to her, he told her, “Don’t worry, the whole country is with us.” She recalled him saying, “I couldn’t hold it in anymore. I had been trying to, but yesterday I just couldn’t stop myself.”
She praised his dedication to family, stating, “Such a brother is rare.” She also explained, “He helps us a lot and doesn’t do anything without talking to us.” Since their father and elder brother passed away, she said, “He is the one now managing the whole household.”
Visits During the IPL
During the 2025 IPL season, while playing for Lucknow Super Giants, Akash Deep kept visiting his sister in the hospital. She said, “When the IPL was going on… I was admitted for cancer treatment. Even then, he would come to meet me either before or after the matches.”
Akash played six IPL games that season and took three wickets.
A Strong Family Bond
His sister said, “During my cancer treatment, he was the one who motivated me the most.” She used to assure him that her husband was there for her, but Akash would say, “Everything I have is for my sisters and my family.” She shared that they are “three brothers and three sisters—one of them has passed away—and Akash is the youngest.”
She further added, “Before and after every match, he makes sure to call home on video.” He recently told her, “I did all this for you and for the country. I took those wickets for you.”
