Modi Blasts Global Elites: ‘Global South Has Voice, Not A Seat At The Table’

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during the BRICS Summit on Sunday, demanded comprehensive reforms in global institutions, condemning the ongoing marginalisation and “double standards” that the Global South is subjected to. He emphasized that the existing world order still kept out countries that make substantial contributions to the global economy.

Addressing the plenary session, Modi claimed that institutions created in the 20th century are no longer representative of today’s geopolitical and economic landscape. “Two-thirds of humanity has not been given proper representation in these international organizations,” he said. Modi compared the situation in today’s institutions to “a mobile phone with a SIM card but no network” if the Global South is not included.

He chastised the absence of real assistance to emerging economies on such pivotal matters as climate finance, sustainable development, and accessing technology, claiming that they are generally accorded token gestures. “This is not merely a question of representation, but also one of credibility and effectiveness,” he added.

The Prime Minister demanded radical reforms in institutions such as the UN Security Council, WTO, and multilateral development banks. He emphasized that governance structures, voting rights, and leadership positions need to be updated to address the needs of the 21st century. “21st-century software cannot be run by 20th-century typewriters,” he emphasized.

Modi praised BRICS as a platform capable of evolving with the times, highlighting the bloc’s recent expansion as evidence of its adaptability. He reiterated India’s commitment to contributing constructively to the group’s initiatives and championing the interests of humanity.

Modi’s remarks reflect the growing demand from emerging economies for a more inclusive, multipolar world order where the Global South holds a rightful place in shaping global policy and governance.
