Patriot Missiles Key to Defence, Says Zelenskyy After Trump Call

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Sunday said he had a meaningful phone call with US President Donald Trump. He appreciated the United States’ willingness to help Ukraine during its ongoing conflict with Russia.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Zelenskyy shared details of their discussion. He wrote, “As per drones, we’ve also reached an agreement with one of the leading American companies to significantly increase our joint efforts. We had an extremely fruitful conversation with the President of the United States yesterday, during which we discussed air defense. I’m grateful for the readiness to assist. Patriot systems are the key to defending against ballistic threats.”

Ukrainian Strike Hits Russian Airbase

Meanwhile, Ukraine’s military claimed it launched a successful strike on Russia’s Borisoglebsk airbase, located in the Voronezh region. They said the attack damaged a depot storing glide bombs and several training aircraft. Russian officials have not yet commented, according to a report by Al Jazeera.

Drone Warfare Escalates on Both Sides

In response, Russia reported multiple Ukrainian drone attacks. Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said air defences intercepted four drones targeting the capital. The incident caused a temporary halt in departures from one of Moscow’s major airports.

At the same time, Russia’s Ministry of Defence reported intercepting 48 Ukrainian drones over a five-hour period on Saturday evening. Earlier that day, they claimed to have shot down 45 more. The ministry also stated that 94 drones were destroyed overnight across Russian territory.

Ukraine Defends Against Heavy Drone Barrage

Ukraine’s Air Force also faced a large-scale drone attack. They said Russia launched 322 drones and decoys into Ukrainian territory late Friday into Saturday. Out of these, 157 were shot down, while 135 were likely jammed electronically.

Trump Frustrated with Putin, Supports Missile Aid

On Friday, President Trump also spoke with President Zelenskyy. After the call, he told reporters that Ukraine urgently needed Patriot missiles to protect itself. He also expressed dissatisfaction with Russian President Vladimir Putin’s approach to the conflict.

Trump said, “It just seems like he wants to go all the way and just keep killing people… It’s not good. I wasn’t happy with it.” He added that he was “very unhappy” after his earlier conversation with Putin.
